Shepherd Baseball Sweeps UVa-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (11-12, 9-1 MEC) swept a doubleheader with UVa-Wise (11-17, 5-5 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Thursday. The Rams posted an 8-1 win in game one and added an 11-4 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind RBI-doubles from junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior second baseman Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling).

The Rams added a run in the second as senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a passed ball.

Shepherd added four runs in the fourth on back-to-back-to-back home runs. Senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) belted a two-run homer, while junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) followed with solo blasts.

UVa-Wise got on the scoreboard in the fifth as Josh Haga walked and later scored on a double by Jordan Turner.

Sarty went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Turner had a 2-for-3 effort for the Cavaliers.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Joe Rindone (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick/Towson) (3-2) (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) gained the win for the Rams. Nathan Hatmaker (2-5) (6.0 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) took the loss for UVa-Wise.

UVa-Wise took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Turner walked, stole second, and later scored on a single by David Thomas.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame as Hoffman hit a two-out single and Heleine followed with a two-run blast to left.

The Rams added a run in the second sophomore shortstop Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) reached on a walk and later scored on a double steal attempt when the runner was caught stealing at second.

The Cavaliers plated three runs on one hit and an error in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

Shepherd took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame as Hoffman reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a single by McCourt.

The Rams added seven runs in the seventh to extend their lead. Freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) belted a solo homer, while Farley and redshirt-freshman outfielder Riley Lazich (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring/Radford) each added RBI-singles to highlight the rally.

UVa-Wise tacked on a run in the eighth as Dawson Cagle led off with a double and scored on a single by Dante Salerno.

Hoffman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to pace the Rams.

Cagle had a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of runs scored to lead Wise.

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (2-3) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 5 BB) earned the win for the Rams. Joe Catalini (0-4) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Cavaliers.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Concord for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
