Top-Ranked Fairmont State Too Much for Shepherd Men

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Matt Bingaya had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead top-ranked Fairmont State (29-1) to a 93-65 win over Shepherd University (19-11) in MEC Men's Basketball Tournament semifinal action at the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday night.

Bingaya hit on 7-of-16 field goals with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. He was 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Shammgod Wells added 15 points and eight assists, while Vonte Montgomery also had 15 points for the Falcons. D'Ondre Stockman tossed in 11 points.

Senior guard Niam Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) led the Rams with 15 points. Sophomore forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) had 14 points, six boards and three steals.

Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 11 points.

Fairmont State had a 43-30 lead at halftime behind 11 first half points from Bingaya.

Shepherd connected on 34.9 percent (22-63) from the floor with a 21.7 percent (5-23) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 76.2 percent (16-21) of their free throws.

Fairmont State shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor with a 42.9 percent effort (15-35) from three-point range. The Falcons shot 93.3 percent (14-15) from the charity stripe.

Fairmont State had a 41-37 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 11.

The Falcons advance to the tournament finals on Sunday. The Rams await word on Sunday on a possible regional postseason bid.
