Shepherd Baseball Splits with Sixth-Ranked Millersville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (2-10) split a pair of games with sixth-ranked Millersville (11-4) in baseball action at Millersville on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd recorded a 7-4 win in game one, while Millersville gained the split with a 1-0 win in eight innings in the nightcap.

After senior second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led off with a walk and senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) singled, junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) belted a three-run blast to give the Rams a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one.

Millersville scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Dan Neff doubled and later scored on a sacrifice by Mitch Stoltzfus. Chas McCormick singled and later scored on a single by David Summerfield.

The Marauders added a run in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3 as Neff tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stoltzfus.

The Rams plated four runs on just one hit in the sixth to gain the win. Freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score a run and Sarty walked with the bases loaded to drive in another run. Senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech) added a two-run single.

The Marauders added a run in the seventh on a solo blast by Neff.

Farley went 2-for-4 to pace the Rams.

Neff went 3-for-4 to lead Millersville.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) tossed a complete game victory for the Rams. Cordell Shannon (5.2 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) took the loss for the Marauders.

Summerfield led off the eighth inning with a triple and Jimmy Cain followed with a single to right to give the Marauders the split.

Reliever Kyle Peterson (1.0 IP, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) picked up the win in relief of starter Dave Manasek (7.0 IP, 1 H, 9 K, 0 BB) for the Marauders. Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (1-2) (7.0 IP, 8 H 1 ER, 9 K, 3 BB) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on March 15 when they travel to Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
