Shepherd Softball Drops Pair to Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-10, 5-5 MEC) dropped a doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit (13-11, 7-5 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals gained a 3-1 win in game one and added a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in game one behind RBI-singles from Mallory Chapman and Rachel Conrad.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the third as sophomore outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) singled and later scored on a double off the bat of sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

The Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth as Chapman walked with the bases loaded to plate Morgan Stohlman, who led off with a single.

Molly Welsh, Cassie Holstein, and Chapman each had a pair of hits for Wheeling Jesuit.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.0 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (5-6) took the loss for the Rams. Chapman (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (8-6) gained the win for the Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 1-0 lead in the third in the nightcap as Welsh reached on a bunt single and later scored on an error.

The Cardinals added a run in the fourth when Taylor DiPerna singled home pinch-runner Michaela Miller.

Welsh and Conrad each had a pair of hits for the Cardinals.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6-3) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Chapman (7.0 IP, 5 H, 4 K, 0 BB) (9-6) gained the win for the Cardinals.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host West Liberty for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
