Shepherd Baseball Splits with Virginia State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. – Shepherd University (18-15) split a doubleheader with Virginia State (15-20) in non-conference baseball action at Virginia State on Wednesday. The Trojans recorded a 6-3 victory in game one, while the Rams grabbed an 11-4 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap as by junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) led off with a walk and later scored on a single by senior second baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC).

The Rams added two runs in the third behind RBI-singles from freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) and  senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech).

The Trojans rallied with four runs in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single by a Sisqo Scott and a two-run homer by David Markins keying the rally.

Shepherd tied the game in the fourth on a solo blast by senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary).

The Rams took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth. Kirk hit a solo blast and Sarty and Heleine added RBI-singles to highlight the scoring outburst.

Shepherd tacked on three more runs in the seventh on a three-run round-tripper by junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

Sophomore reliever Ryan Simpson (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB) (2-2) picked up the win for the Rams. Colton Gunn (5.2 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) took the loss for the Trojans.

Virginia State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a solo blast from Jahleel Sewer.

The Trojans added three runs in the second on a three-run double by Sewer and added single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Shepherd scored a run in the fourth as by Doyle doubled and scored on a single from Farley.

The Rams added a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Farley and another in the seventh as junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC) doubled and scored on a single off the bat of senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando).

Farley had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Sewer went 3-for-3 to lead the Trojans.

Sophomore starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (2.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. Jordan Claytor (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) gained the win for the Trojans.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
