Shepherd Softball Drops Pair at Concord

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – Shepherd University (23-14, 10-8 MEC) dropped a doubleheader at Concord (23-21, 12-8 MEC) in MEC softball action at Concord on Thursday. Concord gained a 3-2 win in game one and added a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Concord took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Alayna Furr singled and later scored on a single by Abby Beatty.

The Mountain Lions added a run in the third as Furr led off with a bunt single and scored on a single by Beatty.

Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the sixth as sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) doubled and scored on a single by senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson). Witt later scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee).

Concord won the game in the bottom of the seventh as Furr walked and scored on a single by Beatty.

Beatty went 4-for-4 to lead Concord.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (8-9) took the loss for the Rams. Allie Reid (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (10-7) gained the win for the Mountain Lions.

Shepherd took a 1-0 in the first inning in the nightcap as junior shortstop Sarah North (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical) walked and later scored on a single by senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson).

Concord tied the game in the second when Lindsey Stahl singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenna Witt.

The Mountain Lions plated three runs in the third as Reid and Stahl each drove in a run to key the rally.

Shepherd added a run in the fourth as Witt doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier).

The Rams scored two more runs in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4 as Witt and Gilligan each had RBI-singles.

Concord scored the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth as Lauren Lewis led off with a single and scored on a double by Reid.

Witt went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (4-2) took the loss. Sarah Herndon (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) (3-9) gained the win for the Mountain Lions.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
