Shepherd Baseball Falls Twice at Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University (18-17, 14-4 MEC) dropped a doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit (4-24, 3-15 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Wheeling Jesuit on Friday. The Cardinals recorded a 4-0 victory in game one and added a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one with Christopher Brake and Jagger Bruck each driving in a run.

The Cardinals added a run in the sixth as Christopher Minder led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brake.

Minder went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to pace the Cardinals.

Senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Joe Rindone (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick/Towson) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 7 K 1 BB) (4-3) took the loss for the Rams. Michael Finch (7.0 IP, 5 H 4 K, 1 BB) (4-4) gained the win for the Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Dillon Sunnafrank and Logan Schlickler each drove in a run.

The Cardinals added two runs in the second behind RBI-singles from Drake May and Matthew Angelini.

Shepherd cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar). Sophomore infielder Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) added and RBI-single to plate freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), who had reached on a double.

The Rams added run in the seventh as Carney led off with a hit-by-pitch and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Doyle

Wheeling Jesuit answered back in the bottom of the frame as Sunnafrank led off with a triple and scored on a single by Minder.

Shepherd got a solo homer by junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) in the ninth, but Wheeling Jesuit held on for the win.

Senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) and freshman shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

May went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for the Cardinals.

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (6.1 IP,7 H 5 R, 3 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (2-5) took the loss for the Rams. Cody Hudson (1.2 IP, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-3) gained the win with Sunnafrank (3.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) earning the save.

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
