Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – Shepherd University (24-15, 11-9 MEC) split a doubleheader with UVa-Wise (21-15, 12-8 MEC) in MEC softball action at UVa-Wise on Friday. UVa-Wise gained a 2-0 win in game one, while Shepherd posted a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

UVa-Wise took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a two-run homer by Bridget Henzel.

Shepherd rallied for four runs in the third to earn the split. Senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) reached on an error, sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) added an infield single, and sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) followed with a grand slam to center field.

Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (5-2) gained the victory in relief. Emily Kale (7.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (4-4) took the loss.

The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in game one in the first inning on an RBI-double by Henzel.

UVa-Wise added a run in the fourth as Nikki Smith was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to plate Olivia Cleary.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (11-4) took the loss for the Rams. Taylor Brandts (7.0 IP, 8 K, 2 BB) (13-5) gained the victory for the Cavaliers with a no-hit effort.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host West Chester for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
