Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit; Reaches 20-Win Mark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University (20-17, 16-4 MEC) pounded out 31 hits on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep of Wheeling Jesuit (4-26 3-17 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday. The Rams recorded an 8-0 victory in game one and added a 20-6 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

The Rams added four runs in the second behind a two-run homer by senior second baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC) and a two-run double by Hoffman.

The Rams tacked on three more runs in the fourth as senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) hit a three-run blast.

Sarty and Carney each went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Chris Brake went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 7 K, 1 BB) (6-0) gained the victory for the Rams. Brian Shaw (2.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Cardinals.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo homer by Hoffman.

The Rams added a run in the third as Carney led off with a walk and later scored on a balk.

Shepherd plated six runs in the fourth as Carney had a two-run blast, freshman catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) hit a three-run homer, and freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added an RBI-single.

The Rams scored three runs in the seventh as a two-run single by redshirt-freshman outfielder Riley Lazich (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring/Radford) keyed the rally.

Senior infielder Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling) smacked a three-run double to highlight a five-run eighth inning.

The Rams plated four more runs in the ninth on one hit and one error.

The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the frame with six runs on four hits and a pair of errors.

Carney went 4-for-4 and Lazich added a 3-for-4 effort for the Rams.

Dillon Sunnafrank led the Cardinals with a 3-for-5 outing.

Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 6 K 0 BB) (4-4) gained the win for the Rams. Kyle Rees (3.0 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-3) took the loss for the Cardinals.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Liberty for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
