Shepherd Softball Splits with #21 West Chester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (25-16) split a doubleheader with 21st-ranked West Chester (33-9) in non-conference softball action at Shepherd on Tuesday. Shepherd gained a 3-1 win in game one, while West Chester posted a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.

West Chester took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Sarah Walasavage singled and later scored when Sara Ercolani reached on an error.

Shepherd tied the game in the second as freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax).

Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the fifth. Junior designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) led off with a double and was replaced by sophomore pinch-runner Ariana Ramirez (Gainesville, Va./Patriot). Ramirez later scored on an infield single by sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee). Konopka scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee).

Konopka and Staley each went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (12-4) earned the win for the Rams. Brooke Harner (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (6-3) took the loss for the Golden Rams.

West Chester took a 1-0 lead in the third in the nightcap as Kelly led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ercolani.

The Golden Rams added three more runs in the fourth with a two-run single by Bri Garber keying the rally.

West Chester added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Courtney Stump.

Stump went 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Rams.

Amanda Houck (7.0 IP, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB) (22-2) earned the complete game shutout win for West Chester. Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (5-3) took the loss for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
