Shepherd Baseball Takes Pair from Concord

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – Shepherd University (13-12, 11-1 MEC) swept a pair of games with Concord (14-14, 8-4 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Concord on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd recorded a 5-3 win in game one and added a 16-4 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one a two-run single by senior shortstop Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC).

The Rams added two runs in the third as senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech) and freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) each drove in a run.

Concord plated three runs in the bottom of the third as Paul Williams, Chad Frazier, and Evan Webb each drove in a run.

Shepherd added a run in the seventh on a solo blast by junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

Hoffman scored a pair of runs to pace the Rams.

Williams and Webb each had a pair of hits for the Mountain Lions.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 5 K, 1 BB) (4-0) gained the victory for the Rams. Junior reliever Dan Galati (Hockessin, Del/St. Elizabeth's/Delaware State) (1.0 IP 2 H) tossed shutout ball in the seventh to earn the save. Joseph Lowder (7.0 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 4 K, 6 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the nightcap, Shepherd scored seven runs in the seventh to pull away for the one-sided win. Hoffman had a two-run single to key the rally.

Redshirt-freshman outfielder Riley Lazich (Big Pool, Md/Clear Spring/Radford) belted a two-run homer in the ninth


Hoffman went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead a 17-hit attack for the Rams. Senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), senior second baseman Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling) , junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU), sophomore shortstop Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), and Doyle each added a pair of hits.


Neff went 3-for-5 and Brett Simmons added a 3-for-3 effort for the Mountain Lions.

Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (7.0 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (3-4) gained the win for the Rams. Nate Werner (6.1 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
