Shepherd Softball Sweeps West Liberty

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (17-10, 7-5 MEC) swept a doubleheader with West Liberty (9-15, 3-9 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Sunday afternoon. The Rams gained an 8-1 win in game one and added a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) singled, stole second, and scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan Medford, N.J. Shawnee).

The Rams added three more runs in the second behind a two-run single by Stuart and a RBI-double from sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

West Liberty scored in the third on a solo homer by Nicki Mihalik.

The Rams added four more runs in the sixth with a three-run triple by Konopka highlighting the rally.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 9 K, 3 BB) (6-6) gained the win for the Rams. Taylor Wright (1.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (1-2) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the sixth in the nightcap with an RBI-double by sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) and an RBI-single from senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) keying the rally.

West Liberty staged a rally in the seventh with a pair of runs. Charley Troggio was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score Julie Tenney, who reached on a single. Kelsi Johnson later scored on a wild pitch from third after reaching on a single. The Rams got a 6-3-2 game-ending double play to seal the win.

Taylor went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Witt added a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and an RBI to lead a nine-hit attack for the Rams.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (7-3) gained the win for the Rams. Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (1.0 IP, 1 K, 1 BB) tossed hitless ball in the seventh to gain the save. Marley Thompson (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 K, 0 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Shippensburg for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
