Shepherd Baseball Takes Pair from West Liberty

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (22-17, 18-4 MEC) swept a doubleheader with West Liberty (22-14, 16-6 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams posted a 9-5 win in game one and added a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the second inning in game one. Junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC)smacked a two-run double and freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added an RBI-triple to key the rally.

West Liberty answered a back in the third on a three-run blast by Mike Adams.

Shepherd added a run in the third as Doyle walked and later scored on a passed ball.

West Liberty took advantage of a pair of Shepherd errors in the fourth to score a pair of runs to cut the lead to 7-5.

The Rams added a run in the bottom of the frame as Carney reached on an error and scored on a double by Doyle.

Shepherd completed the scoring in the sixth as junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) led off with a single and scored on a double off the bat of senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech).

Doyle and Farley each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (7-0) earned the win for the Rams. Sean Pare (4.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 3 K, 4 BB) (3-4) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the third in the nightcap behind an RBI-single from Nolan Marcus.

Shepherd tied the game in the fourth as senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) led off with a single, stole second, and later scored when Doyle reached on a fielder's choice.

The Hilltoppers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Justice Jackson singled and moved to third on a double by Ethan Estes. Jackson scored on a wild pitch and Estes later scored on a single by Adams.

Senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) hit a two-run double and freshman catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) added an RBI-double in the bottom of the frame to give the Rams a 4-3 lead.

The Hilltoppers tied the game on an RBI-single by Estes in the sixth.

The Rams got back-to-back solo homers from Carney and Sarty to take a 6-4 advantage.

West Liberty got a run in the ninth as Marcus led off with a single and later scored when Coby Eckstein was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. Junior reliever Dan Galati (Hockessin, Del./St. Elizabeth's/Delaware State) (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 0 BB), got Vincent Haddox to ground in to a game-ending double play to seal the win and earn the save.

Carney went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to pace the Rams.

Adams went 4-for-5 and Estes added a 3-for-5 effort for the Hilltoppers.

Sophomore reliever Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Rams. Justin Retzer (3-2) (7.0 IP,8 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
