Shepherd Baseball Sweeps West Liberty

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (24-17, 20-4 MEC) swept a doubleheader with West Liberty (22-16, 16-8 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Alumni Day on Sunday. The Rams recorded a 2-1 win in game one and added a 12-2 victory in the nightcap. The Rams ran their winning streak to six games with the sweep.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning in game one as Chad Matthus led off a single, stole second, and later scored on a passed ball.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame as senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) belted a solo homer to left field.

The Rams scored the game-winner in the sixth as senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a throwing error.

Freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) went 2-for-2 for the Rams.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Joe Rindone (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick/Towson) (5-3) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 UR, 7 K, 6 BB) gained the win for the Rams. Junior reliever Dan Galati (Hockessin, Del./St. Elizabeth's/Delaware State) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB) walked the lead-off batter then set three down three Hilltoppers to earn his third save of the season.Yale Hughes (4-2) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) took the loss for West Liberty.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Ethan Estes hit a first-pitch solo blast to left.

Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame behind a two-run single by senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech).

The Hilltoppers tied the game in the fifth as Vincent Haddox homered to right.

The Rams took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam off the bat of sophomore second baseman Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown).

Shepherd plated three runs in the sixth as Sarty, McCourt, and senior first baseman Mike Brown (Brandywine, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/Delaware Tech) each drove in a run.

Brown added a two-run double in the seventh to give the Rams an 11-2 advantage.

Shepherd completed the scoring in the eighth as sophomore outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) reached on a singled and scored on a double by Carney.

Junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) went 3-for-4 with four runs scored to lead a 16-hit attack for the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (3-5) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) earned the win for the Rams. Parker Dyson (2-1) (4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) took the loss for the Cavaliers.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
