Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University (29-16, 15-9 MEC) swept a doubleheader action with Wheeling Jesuit (5-31, 4-20 MEC) in MEC softball action at Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday. Shepherd gained a 3-2 victory in game one and added an 11-3 triumph in six innings in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled and later scored on a double off the bat of senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson).

Wheeling Jesuit tied the game in the fourth as Mallory Chapman led off with a double. She was replaced by pinch-runner Brianna Grimes who scored on a single by Courtney Rogers.

Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Konopka singled and later scored on a throwing error.

Wheeling Jesuit tied the game in the bottom of the inning as jackie Cramer singled and later scored when she stole home.

Shepherd scored a run in the sixth to gain the win. Freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) singled home freshman pinch runner Bailee Jackson (Union, W.Va./James Monroe) for the game-winner.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 10 K, 0 BB) (14-4) earned the win for the Rams. Chapman (7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (11-14) took the loss for the Cardinals.

Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) helped her own cause in the nightcap with a 4-for-4 effort with a pair of runs scored in the nightcap.

Witt added a 2-for-4 performance and drove in four runs. Shepherd used a 15-hit attack in the victory.

Sturgill (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (7-3) gained the win for the Rams. Erin Unterbrink (3.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (4-8) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Fairmont State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
