Shepherd Softball Splits with Fairmont State; Reaches 30-Win Mark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (30-17, 16-10 MEC) split a doubleheader with Fairmont State (17-27, 10-16 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Wednesday. Shepherd gained a 2-1 victory in eight innings in game one, while Fairmont State rallied for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Fairmont State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one on a solo homer from Beth Cook.

Shepherd tied the game in the fourth. Senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) walked and moved to second when freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) walked. Witt was replaced by freshman pinch runner Bailee Jackson (Union, W.Va./James Monroe), who scored on a single to left by senior outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East).

Shepherd won the game in the eighth as sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) hit a two-out double and scored on a single by junior pinch-hitter Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (15-4) tossed a two-hitter to get the win for the Rams. Rachel Bias (7.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (7-12) took the loss for the Cardinals.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as Konopka tripled to right center and later scored on a single by Witt.

Fairmont State plated a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to gain the win. Abbi Fetty singled home pinch runner Tori Postlewait to tie the game and Samantha Hoban drew a base-loaded walk to score Jordan Lewis, who also reached on a walk.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 UR, 4 K, 4 BB) (8-10) took the loss for the Rams. Hannah Absalom (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (8-12) gained the win for the Falcons.

The two teams return to action on Thursday for 3 p.m. doubleheader at Shepherd with Fairmont State being the home team.
