Shepherd Baseball Splits with Notre Dame

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (25-18, 21-5 MEC) used a 17-hit attack en route to a 15-0 win in the nightcap to gain a doubleheader split with Notre Dame (15-29, 10-16 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Falcons recorded a 4-2 win in eight innings in game one.

Shepherd plated seven runs in the third in the nightcap behind a three-run homer from senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary), a solo blast by junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown), and a two-run double by freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).

The Rams added eight more runs in the seventh on eight hits and two errors. Senior designated hitter Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling) smacked a two-run double to key the scoring outburst.

Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (7.0 IP, 7 K, 3 BB) (5-4) earned the complete game two-hit shutout for the Rams. Tyler Gault (2.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (5-3) took the loss for the Falcons.

Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the fourth in game one as Zach Santoro had an RBI-single and another run scored an infield error.

Shepherd scored a run in the fifth on a solo round-tripper from Sarty.

The Rams tied the game in the seventh as Sarty reached on a walk and eventually scored when he stole home.

The Falcons got an RBI-double Danny Beaver and an RBI-single from Nick Ely in the eighth to grab the win.

Senior pitcher Brandon Hovel (Aberdeen, Md./Kenwood/CCBC Dundalk) (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (0-3) took the loss for the Rams. Josh Armbruster (7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (2-7) earned the win, while Kevin Guzik (0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 K, 1 BB) notched the save for the Falcons.

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.

Notes: Senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) set the SU career mark for most runs scored with a run in the nightcap … Carney surpassed the old mark of 187 shared by former standouts Michael Lott and Nathan Minnich.
