Shepherd Softball Sweeps Shippensburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (19-10) swept a doubleheader with Shippensburg (16-15) in non-conference softball action at Shepherd on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams gained a 5-0 win in game one and added a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one behind a two-run double by sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

The Rams added a run in the fourth as sophomore designated player Ariana Ramirez (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) walked and later scored when junior pinch-hitter Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) reached on an error.

Shepherd added two runs in the fifth. Sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan Medford, N.J. Shawnee) reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown), who later scored on a wild pitch.

Taylor went 3-for-3 and Konopka added a 2-for-4 effort to lead the Rams.

Maddie Mulhall had a pair of hits for the Raiders.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 K, 0 BB) (7-6) gained the shutout win for the Rams. Nicole Smith (4.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (4-4) took the loss for the Raiders.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first in the nightcap. Gilligan and senior outfielder/pitcher Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) each drove in a run to key the rally.

The Rams added four runs in the second with freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson), Gilligan, and Taylor each driving in a run.

Shippensburg scored in the third as Tara Bicko led off with a double and later scored on a double by Chloe Collins.

Shepherd plated a run in the bottom of the frame as sophomore outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Konopka.

Munda hit a two-run single for the Rams in the fourth to up the lead to 10-1.

Shippensburg added a run in the fifth as Kendall Geis tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Collins.

Junior shortstop Sarah North (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical) went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Rams.

Collins went 2-for-2 for the Raiders.

Hanson (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 04 K, 0 BB) (8-3) gained the win for the Rams in the nightcap. Taryn Wilson (1.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (3-3) took the loss for the Raiders.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
