Shepherd Baseball Splits with Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio – Shepherd University (15-14, 12-2 MEC) split a doubleheader with Urbana (12-17, 6-8 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Urbana on Saturday. The Rams posted an 8-2 victory in game one, while the Blue Knights earned a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a two-run homer by junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

The Rams added a run in the second on an RBI-single by freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).

Shepherd added two runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and an RBI-single from Doyle.

Urbana scored a run in the fourth on an RBI by Bradley Burkholder.

Shepherd plated three runs in the fifth behind a two-run single by senior second baseman Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling) and an RBI-double by Doyle.

The Blue Knights added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Isac Franklin.

Doyle went 3-for-4 and Hoffman added a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Joe Rindone (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick/Towson) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 4 BB) (4-2) earned the win for the Rams. Patrick Orr (4.1 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 4 K, 4 BB) (0-3) took the loss for the Blue Knights.

Urbana took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Franklin led off with a single and later scored on an error.

The Blue Knights added an unearned run in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Shepherd rallied in the ninth with a two-run homer from sophomore outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar), but the Blue Knights held on for the win.

Mickey Barea went 2-for-4 to lead the Blue Knights.

Sophomore pitcher AJ Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (2-4) took the loss for the Rams. Adam Guay (8.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (4-1) gained the win with Robbie Guerrero (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) earning the save.

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
