Shepherd Softball Takes Pair from Notre Dame

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (21-10, 9-5 MEC) swept a doubleheader with Notre Dame (15-16, 7-9 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams gained a 4-2 win in game one and added a 10-4 triumph in the nightcap.

Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in game one behind RBI-singles from Nicole Luciano and Maria Vanadia.

Shepherd answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame. Junior shortstop Sarah North (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical) reached on a fielder choice and later scored when freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) reached on a fielder's choice.

The Rams added three runs in the fifth to rally for the win as sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan Medford, N.J. Shawnee), sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier), and senior outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) each had RBI-singles.

Senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) and Konopka each went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Emily Kusmits went 3-for-4 for the Falcons.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (8-6) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Taylor Olson (4.1 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (9-7) took the loss for the Falcons.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as North singled and later scored on a double by Gilligan.

The Rams added a run in the second on a solo homer by junior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).

Notre Dame cut the lead to 2-1 in the third as Kusmits doubled and scored on a double by Vanadia.

The Rams tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame behind RBI-singles from Gilligan and Buckworth.

Shepherd added a run in the fourth as Konopka doubled and later scored on an infield error.

The Falcons used a solo homer by Vanadia and a two-run blast by Perris Stevens in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Rams erupted for five runs in the sixth to pull away for the win. A two-run single by Gilligan keyed the rally.

Gilligan went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and North went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to pace a 14-hit attack for the Rams.

Vanadia went 3-for-4 for the Falcons.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (9-3) gained the win for the Rams in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (1.2 IP, 0 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Kusmits (2.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (5-4) took the loss for the Falcons.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Urbana for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Notes: Hanson recorded her 40th career win with today's victory ... Sturgill recorded her second save of the season to tie the Shepherd season mark ... Shepherd ran its winning streak to six games.
