Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Urbana; Carney Sets Hits Mark

URBANA, Ohio – Shepherd University (17-14, 14-2 MEC) pounded out 26 hits on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep of Urbana (12-19, 6-10 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Urbana on Sunday. The Rams posted a 6-3 victory in game one and added 19-17 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the third inning in game one behind two-run singles by junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) and senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech).

The Rams added a run in the fifth as senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) reached on an error and later scored on a single by freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the sixth as Farley led off with a single and was replaced by sophomore pinch runner Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar). Enstminger stole second and later scored on a single by junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC).

Urbana scored a run in the bottom of the frame on a solo blast by Damario Brown.

The Blue Knights added a pair of runs in the seventh on RBI-singles from Brent West and Nick Gallagher.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (5-0) gained the victory for the Rams. Jackson Everman (2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (3-1) took the loss for the Blue Knights.

Senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) went 4-for-7 to pace the Rams in the slugfest nightcap victory. Carney (251) surpassed Nathan Minnich and Michael Lott (250 each) as Shepherd's all-time career hits leader.

Junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) added a 2-for-4 effort with four runs batted in and three runs scored, while Doyle went 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored

The Rams got home runs from Sarty, Hoffman and Doyle

Isac Franklin went 4-for-7 with three runs batted in and three runs scored to pace the Blue Knights.

Sophomore reliever Ryan Simpson (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) (3.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB) (1-2) gained the win for the Rams. Robbie Guerrero (2.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (0-2) suffered the loss for the Blue Knights.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Virginia State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
