Shepherd Softball Splits with Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (22-11, 10-6 MEC) split a doubleheader with Urbana (10-14, 7-9 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Sunday. The Blue Knights gained a 2-0 win in game one, while Shepherd earned a 5-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Urbana took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as Courtney Stewart led off with a single and later scored on a single by Margo Jackson.

The Rams took a 2-1 lead in the fourth behind a two-run double off the bat of junior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie).

Sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) belted a three-run homer in the fifth to give the Rams a 5-1 advantage. Gilligan leads the Rams with four round-trippers on the season.

Senior outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) and Robinson each went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (10-3) gained the win for the Rams in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (1.0 IP, 1 K, 1 BB) worked the final inning. Carly Allen (5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 5 BB) (6-8) took the loss for the Blue Knights.

Urbana scored two runs in the sixth on RBI-doubles from Jackson and Caitlyn Stoner in game one to notch the win.

Junior designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) and sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn
Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each had 2-for-3 efforts for the Rams.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 0 BB) (8-7) took the loss for the Rams. Allen (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 K, 0 BB) gained the win for the Blue Knights.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
