Shepherd Baseball Downs West Virginia Wesleyan to Advance to MEC Tournament Finals

BECKLEY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (31-21) used a 13-hit attack en route to an 11-5 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (23-29) at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley in MEC Baseball Tournament action  in the later game on Saturday. Shepherd advances to Sunday's championship round.

Shepherd scored three runs in the first, three in the sixth, and five in the seventh to pull away for the convincing win.

Junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) hit a two-run double to key the rally in the first.

After Wesleyen had tied the game at 3-3, Shepherd plated three in the sixth as senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC), and freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) each drove in a run.

Freshman shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook)had a two-run double to key the rally in the seventh.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 11 K, 2 BB) (9-0) earned the win for the Rams. Griffin Roe (5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 K, 4 BB) (2-4) took the loss for the Bobcats.

The Rams return to action on Sunday in the championship round against the winner of tomorrow morning's Charleston-West Virginia Wesleyan game at 1 p.m.
