Shepherd Baseball Falls to Shippensburg

Box Score JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Shepherd University (33-24) dropped a 10-5 decision to Shippensburg (31-23-1) in NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Baseball Championship action  at  Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. The loss eliminates the Rams from regional play.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Freshman catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) and freshman shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) each singled and senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Burack scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run). Burgreen later scored on a wild pitch.

The Raiders answered back in the bottom of the frame with five runs on six hits. Drew Bene belted a three-run homer, while Nick Spangler and Grant Hoover each added RBI-singles.

Shippensburg added two runs in the fourth in the on a two-run single by Hoover.

The Raiders took a 10-2 lead in the fifth with three runs. A two-run homer by Ty Painter keyed the rally.

Shepherd completed the scoring with three runs in top of the sixth. Junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) and senior second baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC) hit back-to-back homers and Carney added an RBI-single. Heleine's home run was his 15th of the year, while Kirk belted his 12th of the year.

Senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech) and Burgreen each had three hits for the Rams. Carney and Sarty each added a pair. 

Bene and Hoover had three hits apiece for  Shippensburg.

Both teams had 14 hits on the day.

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (5-6) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Gabe Mosser (8-5) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) earned the win for the Raiders.

Shippensburg advances to face Winston-Salem State on Sunday at noon.
