Shepherd Softball Goes 2-1 at MEC Tournament; Sets Wins Mark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 SALEM, Va. – Shepherd University went 2-1 in second day action of the MEC Softball Tournament in Salem, Virginia on Saturday. Shepherd (38-20) handed Urbana an 8-0 setback in five innings in an early contest, then rallied for a 3-2 win over Concord in a later contest. The Rams were eliminated by UVa-Wise, 3-1, in an evening contest.

Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 3-for-3, drove in three runs, and scored another to lead the Rams against Urbana. Senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) went 1-for-2, drove in a pair of runs, and belted a solo homer, while sophomore designated player Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) had a two-run triple and scored a pair of runs.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB) (20-5) earned the win for the Rams. Carly Allen (4.1 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 0 K, \3 BB) (12-18) took the loss for the Blue Knights.

Concord took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI-single by Allie Beatty.

Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a solo blast by Witt.

The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI-single by Kylie Kent.

Shepherd rallied with a pair of runs in the seventh to grab the win. Freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) started the rally with a two-out single . Stuart moved to third on a single by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan Medford, N.J. Shawnee). Sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) followed with a two-run double to end the game.

Sturgill (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (10-4) gained the victory. Sarah Herndon (6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 8 BB) (7-11) took the loss.

UVa-Wise scored single runs as in the first, second, and third innings to take a3-0 advantage.

Shepherd plated a run in sixth as Gilligan reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Sturgill.

Sturgill went 3-for-3 and Witt added a 2-for-3 effort for the Rams.

Zoe Millard and Samantha Ely each had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Cavaliers.

Hanson (1.2 IP, 4, H, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) 20-6 took the loss for the Rams. Emily Kale (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 UR, 2 K, 2 BB) (7-4) picked up the win for the Cavaliers.

The Rams await word a possible NCAA II regional bid on Monday morning.

Notes: Shepherd's 38 wins set a program single season mark … Konopka (69 hits) set a Shepherd single season hits record, eclipsing the old mark of 67 set by Mia Zappacosta in 2007… Tara Hanson (51 career wins) joins Nichole Pitcock (57, 2008-11) as only Shepherd players to have 50 wins or more.
