SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept a doubleheader with Fairmont State in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Senior Day on Sunday. The Rams recorded a 7-1 win in game one and added a 7-1 triumph in the nightcap. The Rams win the MEC North title with the sweep.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown), senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech), and senior second baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC) each drove in a run to key the rally.

The Rams added a run in the second on an RBI-single by senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) to take a 5-0 advantage.

Shepherd added a pair of runs in the third as Farley reached on an error and scored on a double by Kirk. Sophomore outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a passed ball.

The Falcons scored in the seventh as Jacob Whitmore reached on a walk and scored on a single by Fraser Brown.

Sarty and Kirk each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB) (8-0) earned the win for the Rams. Pansch combined with senior pitcher Brandon Hovel (Aberdeen, Md./Kenwood/CCBC Dundalk) (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) and senior pitcher Gabe Castro (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) on a two-hitter. Matt Maiers (4.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (4-4) took the loss for the Falcons.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap. Freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) walked and later scored on a ground out by Hoffman. Sarty singled and scored on a double by Farley.

The Rams added a run in the third as Hoffman walked and scored on a single by Entsminger.

Kirk hit a two-run double in the fifth to give the Rams a 5-0 lead.

The Falcons plated a run in the sixth as Brown doubled and later scored on a single by Austin Norman.

The Rams took a 6-1 lead in the sixth as freshman catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) led off with a double and later scored on a single by senior first baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando).

Shepherd capped the scoring with a run in the eighth as Burack was hit-by-pitch and later scored when Doyle walked with the bases loaded.

Farley went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams. Freshman shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook), Kirk and Entsminger each added a apir of hits.

Norman went 3-for-4 for Fairmont State.

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (5-5) earned the win for the Rams. Luke Paull (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (5-5) took the loss for the Falcons.

The Rams return to action on Thursday for first round action of the MEC Tournament in Beckley.
