Box Score URBANA, Ohio – Junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Shepherd University (10-6, 6-4 MEC) to a 61-58 win over Urbana (3-12, 2-8 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Urbana on Saturday. The Rams run their winning streak to seven games with the victory.
Burgess hit on 8-of-9 field goals with a 6-of-8 effort from the charity stripe.
Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to record his eighth double-double of the season. Senior forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) added eight points and five boards.
Malik Jacobs had 20 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots to lead the Blue Knights. Carlas Jackson added 10 points.
Urbana had a 31-26 lead at halftime.
Shepherd used an 18-3 run to erase a 10-point deficit and take a 50-45 lead with 5:00 left in regulation. The Blue Knights closed on a 6-1 run to force the extra session.
Shepherd outscored Urbana, 10-7, in overtime to secure the win. Carr and senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) each had five overtime points.
Shepherd connected on 34.9 percent (22-63) from the floor with a 20.8 percent (5-24) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 68.7 percent (12-18) of their free throws.
Urbana shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the floor with a 38.1 percent effort (8-21) from three-point range. The Blue Knights shot 60 percent (6-10) from the charity stripe.
Urbana had a 38-37 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed nine.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 4 p.m. contest.
