Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to lead Shepherd University (11-6, 7-4 MEC) to a 63-58 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (2-15, 2-9 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday. The Rams recorded their eighth consecutive win with the victory.
Carr hit on 7-of-12 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from three-point range.
Sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored 13 points and handed out five assists, while senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 12 points, five boards, and four assists.
Senior forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) added nine points, while junior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) had six points and five assists off the bench for the Rams.
Fred Brondsted scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Bobcats. Aaron Ariri added 17 points and seven rebounds.
West Virginia Wesleyan had a 34-30 lead at halftime as Brondsted had 16 first-half points.
Shepherd used a 13-4 run to take 51-50 lead after a layup by McKnight with 8:38 remaining. The
Bobcats would get to within three points at 59-56 after a dunk by Ariri with 22 seconds left, but Lang drained 4-of-4 free throws for the Rams down the stretch to seal the win.
Shepherd connected on 46 percent (23-50) from the floor with a 38.5 percent (10-26) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 100 percent (7-7) of their free throws.
West Virginia Wesleyan shot 53.3 percent (24-45) from the floor with a 41.7 percent effort (5-12) from three-point range. The Bobcats shot 55.6 percent (5-9) from the charity stripe.
West Virginia Wesleyan had a 25-24 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed eight.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 4 p.m. contest.
