West Liberty Tops Shepherd Women

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Marissa Brown scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead West Liberty (8-11, 5-8 MEC) to a 72-59 win over Shepherd University (9-10, 5-8 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at West Liberty on Wednesday night

Senior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) led the Rams with a game-high 25 points. Arden connected on 11-of-29 shots with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. She was 1-of-2 from the line.

Junior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area) added 12 points and 10 rebounds. She connected on 4-of-7 field goals with a 4-of-8 effort from the foul line. She added a game-high five steals.  Lankford recorded her fourth double-double of the season. Junior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) added seven points.

Johnie Olkosky and McKenna Shives each had 13 points, while Brandi Beader had 12 for the Hilltoppers. Audrey Tingle contributed seven points and a game-high eight assists.

Shepherd had a 34-32 lead at halftime behind 18 first-half points from Arden.

The Hilltoppers outscored Shepherd 23-12 in the third period to pull away for the win.

Shepherd shot 36.5 percent (23-63) from the floor with a 36.4 percent effort (4-11) from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 50 percent (9-18) of their free throws.

West Liberty hit on 37.5 percent (21-56) from the floor with a 21.7 percent (11-29) performance from beyond the arc. The Hilltoppers connected on 76 percent (19-25) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 40-39 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 22 turnovers and committed 19.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 2 p.m. contest.
