Shepherd Women Fall to Wheeling Jesuit

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Chenelle Moore scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Wheeling Jesuit (9-11, 7-7 MEC) to a 63-50 win over Shepherd University (9-11, 5-9 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday afternoon.

Junior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area) paced the Rams with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. She connected on 6-of-8 field goals with a 2-of-3 effort from the line.

Freshman forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 14 points and four boards, while senior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) was also in double figures with 11 points.

Mariah Callen added 15 points and Cassi Stein tossed in 13 for the Cardinals. Lauren Lipscomb had 10 points.

Wheeling Jesuit had a 32-26 lead at halftime as Moore (10) and Callen (10) combined for 20 first-half points.

The Cardinals outscored the Rams 18-5 in the third period to take a commanding 50-31 advantage.

Shepherd used a 13-3 run to rally to within 10 points at 56-46 after a layup by Lankford with 3:44 remaining. The Rams would get no closer the remainder of the contest.

Shepherd shot 35.3 percent (18-51) from the floor with a 26.7 percent effort (4-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 90.9 percent (10-11) of their free throws.

Wheeling Jesuit hit on 46 percent (23-50) from the floor with a 46.7 percent (7-15) performance from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on 58.8 percent (10-17) of their free throws.

Wheeling Jesuit had a 38-24 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 27 turnovers and committed 22.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Notre Dame for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
