Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a game-high 22 points to lead Shepherd to a 65-53 win over UVa-Wise in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday.
Arden connected on 7-of-16 field goals with an 0-for-2 effort from beyond the arc. She was 8-of-9 from the line.
Sophomore guard Lauren Reed (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) added a season-high 12 points behind a 4-of-6 performance from three-point range. Freshman forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, while senior guard Tiffany McKinney (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC) tossed in eight points. Junior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) contributed seven points a game-high five assists, four boards, and three steals.
Adalmaryz Gomez and Kalee Johnson each had 10 points to lead the Highland Cavaliers (2-11, 1-7 MEC). Cynita Webb added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
UVa-Wise had a 27-25 lead at halftime as Johnson (7) and Gomez (6) teamed up for 13 first-half points.
The Rams (8-6, 4-4 MEC) used a 14-2 run early in the fourth period to take a 17-point lead at 63-46 after a three-pointer by McKinney with 3:06 remaining. McKinney had six points to fuel the run.
Shepherd shot 39 percent (23-59) from the floor with a 46.7 percent effort (7-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 70.6 percent (12-17) of their free throws.
UVa-Wise hit on 37.5 percent (18-48) from the floor with a 20 percent (2-10) performance from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers connected on 88.2 percent (15-17) of their free throws.
UVa-Wise had a 41-28 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 26 turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Notre Dame for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
