SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 29-of-37 passes for 306 yards and a school-record seven touchdowns to lead Shepherd (6-2, 6-2 MEC) to a 58-35 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (1-8, 1-7 MEC) in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Bagent teamed with junior tight end DJ Cornish (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) on a 12-yard scoring pass with to give the Rams a 6-0 lead with 5:04 left in the first quarter. An errant snap prevented an extra point attempt.
Bagent fired a seven-yard scoring strike to with 11:34 left in the second quarter to junior running back Deonte Glover (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman/WVU) to up the Shepherd lead to 13-0. Sophomore kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
Glover scored on a one-yard plunge with 6:59 left in the quarter to give Shepherd a 19-0 advantage.
Jujuan Linzy took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a score for West Virginia Wesleyan to cut the lead to 19-7 with 6:47 left in the quarter.
Bagent and Cornish teamed on a 16-yard scoring strike with 2:43 left in the half to give the Rams a 25-7 lead.
The Rams took a 32-7 lead into the intermission when Bagent found junior wide receiver Greg Leonard (Lusby, Md./Patuxent/Clarion) in the end zone for a 13-yard scoring pass. Graduate student punter Ruan Venter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) added the extra point on a drop kick.
The Bobcats scored on a 38-yard pass from Matt Vinson to Jujuan Linzy with 12;)2 left in the third quarter.
Shepherd got a 37-yard scoring jaunt from freshman running back Antwan Squire (Clinton, Md./Suitland) with 11:03 left in the third quarter to give increase the lead to 38-14.
Bagent and Cornish teamed on a 16-yard scoring pass with 7:48 left in the quarter.
Lawrence Brown scored on a 10-yard run for the Bobcats with 27 seconds left in the quarter.
Shepherd answered back when Bagent teamed with senior wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) on a 50-yard scoring play to give Shepherd a 51-21 advantage with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.
Vinson fired a six-yard scoring strike to Elijah Nelson with 12:14 left in the fourth quarter for the Bobcats.
Bagent found senior wide receiver Wanya Allen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard score with 9:26 left in the game.
West Virginia Wesleyan completed the scoring when Vinson and Linzy combined on a four-yard scoring toss with 1:59 remaining in the game.
Vinson was 20-of-33 for 197 yards for the Bobcats.
Allen had 10 catches for 94 yards to lead the Shepherd receivers. Feiss added seven grabs for 81 yards, while Cornish had four catches for 50 yards with three touchdown receptions. Linzy had six catches for 39 yards and Derek Drapen added four grabs for 61 yards to pace the Bobcats.
Squire rushed 15 times for 174 yards to lead the Shepherd ground attack. Brown rushed 20 times for 101 yards for Wesleyan.
Shepherd had 517 yards of total offense, while West Virginia Wesleyan totaled 338.
Freshman linebacker Ahmad Jones (Atlantic City, N.j./Atlantic City) led the Shepherd defense that forced five turnovers. Jones had eight tackles (six solos) with a pair of forced fumbles. Sophomore linebacker Chrys Lane (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) added five stops (four solos) with a tackle-for-loss. Anthony Hill recorded eight tackles (four solos) for the Bobcats.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to University of Charleston for a noon contest.
