Shepherd Football Falls to UVa-Wise

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – UVa-Wise (4-6, 4-6 MEC) rallied past Shepherd (7-3, 7-3 MEC) for a 21-16 win in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. The game marked the final Mountain East Conference contest for both schools.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when freshman quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) teamed with senior wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) on a 12-yard scoring play with 12:49  left in the second quarter. Sophomore kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.

Tanner Bernard fired a 35-yard scoring strike to Alonzo Brown for the Cavaliers with 13:10 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

August-Scriven connected on a 32-yard field goal with 9:09 left in the third quarter to give Shepherd a 10-7 advantage.

Victor Mitchell scored on a five yard-run to give UVa-Wise a 14-10 lead with 4:45 left in the third quarter.

Jason Lewis recovered a muffed punt in the end zone for a score with 8:22 left in the game to up the Wise lead to 21-10.

Bagent scored on a two-yard plunge with 2:46 left to cut the lead to 21-16. The two-point attempt failed.

The Rams had one last possession with 1:28 left as they started at their own two-yard line. Shepherd was unable to convert a fourth-and-two at its own 33-yard line with 45 seconds remaining and Wise held on for the win.

Bagent completed 28-of-46 passes for 245 yards. Bernard was 15-of-24 for 138 yard for Wise.

Feiss had 14 catches for 116 yards to lead the Shepherd receivers.  Allen added four grabs for 65 yards. Chris Thaxton had eight catches for 65 yards for Wise.

Junior running back Deonte Glover (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman/WVU) rushed 12 times for 57 yards to lead the Shepherd ground attack. Victor Mitchell rushed 20 times for 33 yards for Wise.

Shepherd had 282 yards of total offense, while Wise had 165.

Sophomore linebacker Chrys Lane (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) recorded seven tackles (three solos) with a pair of tackles-for-loss and a sack. Senior defensive end Tatah Ndeh (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added six stops and a pair of sacks. Buster Henderson recorded 11 tackles (five solos) for the Cavaliers.
