Shepherd Men Downed by UVa-Wise

WISE, Va. – Taiwo Badmus posted game highs of 31 points and 12 rebounds to lead UVa-Wise (11-13, 9-9 MEC) to a 70-63 win over Shepherd University (14-10, 10-8 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at UVa-Wise on Saturday.

Badmus hit on 10-of-21 field goals with a 5-of-12 effort from three-point range. He connected on 6-of-8 free throws.

Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Rams.  

Sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 12 points and six assists, while junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 11 points and eight boards.

Yesid-Mosquera-Perea added 17 points, while Chance Sheffey had 10 for the Cavaliers. Michal Seals had five points and a game-high 10 assists.

UVa-Wise led by as many as 11 points in the second half but Shepherd used an 11-0 run to tie the game at 54-all after a jumper by Burgess with 6:15 remaining. Lang had five points during the run. 

The Cavaliers closed the game on a 16-9 run to capture the win.

Shepherd connected on 46.6 percent (27-58) from the floor with a 17.6 percent (3-17) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 75 percent (6-8) of their free throws.

UVa-Wise shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the floor with a 40.6 percent effort (13-32) from three-point range. The Cavaliers shot 70 percent (7-10) from the charity stripe.

UVa-Wise had a 33-32 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed eight.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host West Virginia State for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Notes: Steffen Davis was 1-4 from three-point range ... his three-pointer allowed him to tie current assistant coach Brantley Osborne (2010-14) as Shepherd's all-time leader in career three-pointers with 315.
