Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward
AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored 22 points and sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 21 to lead Shepherd University (15-10, 11-8 MEC) to a 100-93 overtime win over West Virginia State (12-12, 10-9 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday night.
Senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 19 points behind a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range. His five three-pointers give him 320 for his career as he broke the Shepherd all-time record he shared with Brantley Osborne (2010-14) entering tonight's game.
Carr connected on 9-of-15 field goals with a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range. He was 2-of-4 from the line. He also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) added 15 points and a game-high six assists. Senior forward
Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) contributed 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Pat Johnson-Agwu tallied a game-high 24 points for the Yellow Jackets. Jeremiah Moore added 16 points and seven boards, while Robert Fomby had 15 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Shepherd had a 47-36 lead at halftime as Davis (13) and Lang (12) combined for 35 points in the first half.
In the second half neither team led by more than eight points. Shepherd rallied from a six-point deficit late in regulation to force the extra session. Davis drained a three-pointer with 2:52 left to pull the Rams within three with 2:52 left and added another with 29 seconds left to tie the game.
Shepherd outscored State 16-9 in overtime to earn the win. McTavish hit a pair of three-pointers and was 2-of-2 from the line, while Lang hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Shepherd connected on 54 percent (34-58) from the floor with a 54.8 percent (17-31) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 75 percent (15-20) of their free throws.
West Virginia State shot 60.3 percent (38-63) from the floor with a 61.9 percent effort (13-21) from three-point range. The Yellow Jackets shot 33 percent (4-12) from the charity stripe.
West Virginia State had a 34-26 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed eight.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Charleston for a 4 p.m. game.
