Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – Shepherd University (2-5) used a 13-hit attack en route to an 8-4 win over Virginia State (6-1-1) in baseball action at Virginia State on Saturday.
Virginia State took a 2-0 led in the second inning as Justin Nase had an RBI-single and another run scored on a balk.
Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth as sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) singled and later scored on a groundout by sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).
Shepherd broke the game open with six runs in the eighth. Junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) belted a two-run homer, sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) added a two-run double, and junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) added an RBI-single to key the scoring outburst.
The Trojans added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as Jahleel Sewer drove in a run and scored another.
The Rams added a run in the ninth as junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) reached on a walk and later scored on a double by Smith.
Smith went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams. Hamel and Entsminger each added a pair of hits.
Aaron Harris went 2-for-4 to pace the Trojans.
Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) (2-1) gained the win for the Rams. Jarren Norman (1-1) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) took the loss for the Trojans.
The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
