Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Shepherd University (1-1) split a pair of games in softball action at the Coker Spring Tournament on Saturday. The Rams gained an 8-0 win over Bloomsburg in six innings in an early game before dropping an 8-1 decision to King (Tenn.) in a later contest.
Munda belted a two-run homer and junior shortstop Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) added a two-run double to lead a five-hit attack.
Munda went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Kalynn Wheeland doubled in the second inning for Bloomsburg's lone hit.
Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.0 IP, 1 H, 6 K, 1 BB) (1-0) gained the one-hit shutout win for the Rams. Erin Smith (2.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 4 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Huskies.
Shepherd scored its only run in the first inning in the later game against King as senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) doubled and later scored on a double by junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).
Konopka and junior outfielder Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Hannah Riddle went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for King.
Sturgill (3.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. Emma Hughes (5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 K, 0 BB) (1-3) picked up the win for the Tornado.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face WVU Tech at 9 a.m. and host Coker at 1 p.m. in second-day tournament action.
