Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. – Shepherd University (3-6) split a doubleheader with Virginia State (7-3-1) in baseball action at Virginia State on Sunday. The Rams gained a 10-6 win in game one, while Virginia State earned the split with an 8-3 win in the nightcap.
The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the third inning in game one. Senior first baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown), senior third baseman Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC), sophomore outfielder Riley Lazich (Big Pool, Md.Clear Spring/Radford), and junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) each drove in a run.
Shepherd added three runs in the fourth behind an RBI-single by junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) and an RBI-double by Hoffman.
The Trojans rallied with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame. A two-run single by Sisqo Scott keyed the rally.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the fifth. Sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) led off with a double and sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) followed with a two-run blast.Doyle added a solo shot in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Doyle went 4-for-5 with four runs scored to lead the Rams.
Julian Scott went 3-for-4 for the Trojans.
Sophomore pitcher Wes Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill/UMES) (3.0 IP, 0 R, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Rams. Gerald Taylor (0-1) (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) gained the win for the Trojans.
Scott went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Virginia State in the nightcap. Jahleel Sewer added a two-run homer.
Junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) hit a two-run homer and Atkinson added a run-scoring double to lead the Rams.
Junior starter Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss. Taylor (1-1) (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) gained the win for the Trojans.
The Rams return to action on March 10 when they host Queens College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader
