Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, N.C. – Shepherd University (0-3) dropped a pair of games to 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke (3-0) in baseball doubleheader action at UNC Pembroke on Saturday. The Braves gained a 14-3 win in game one and added a 16-6 win in the nightcap.
UNC Pembroke took a 5-0 lead in the second inning in game one with a two-run single by Kevon Perkins highlighting the rally.
After UNC Pembroke added a run in the third, Shepherd plated a run in the fourth as junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) led off with a single and later scored on a groundout by senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).
Eddy Baucom hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 8-3.
Shepherd added a pair of runs in the fifth as sophomore second baseman Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) singled and sophomore shortstop Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot) followed with a two-run blast to left.
The Braves added four more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Sloper went 2-for-4 to pace an eight-hit attack for the Rams.
Seth Hartings went 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Baucom added a 2-for-4 outing with three RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Braves.
Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) (4.0 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 Ks, 6 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams in game one. Jordan Toney (5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 5 Ks, 1 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Braves.
UNC Pembroke scored five runs in the first en route to the 16-6 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd rallied with five runs in the eighth behind a three-run homer by Smith and a two-run shot by senior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU)
The Rams added a run in the ninth as sophomore outfielder Riley Lazich (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring/Radford) singled and later scored on a pinch-hit single by freshman infielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School).
Sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), Lazich, Smith, and Sloper each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Trevor Clemons went 2-for-4 with four runs scored to pace the Braves
Freshman pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (4.1 IP, 6 H, 8 R 7 ER, 2 Ks, 7 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. Braves reliever Gunner Deal (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 Ks, 0 BB) (1-0) got the win.
The Ram return to action on Friday, Feb. 9 when they travel to USC-Aiken for a 4 p.m. contest.
