Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken (3-1) outslugged Shepherd University (0-4) for a 16-7 win in baseball action at USC Aiken on Thursday.
The Pacers took a 5-0 lead in the first inning with a three-run homer by Brian Parreira and a solo blast by Philip Watcher keying the rally.
Shepherd rallied with a pair of runs in the second. Senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) singled and junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) followed with a one-out double. Sophomore second baseman Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) singled to plate Hoffman and sophomore shortstop Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot) laced a two-run single to center to score Entsminger and Burgreen.
USC Aiken added five runs in the fourth before Shepherd tacked on three runs in the fifth on a three-run blast off the bat of sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena. Md./IMG Academy) to cut the lead to 10-6.
The Pacers added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Blake Bottomley.
Hamel smacked a solo blast in the seventh for the Rams.
The Pacers added five runs in the seventh with a two-run homer by Daulton Weeks highlighting the inning.
Doyle and Hamel led the Rams with 3-for-5 efforts at the plate.
Parreira went 3-for-5 to lead the Pacers.
Freshman starter Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (0-2) (4.0 IP, 7 H, 10 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Christian Aragon (1-0) (5.0 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) gained the win for USC Aiken.
Shepherd outhit USC Aiken, 13-10.
The two teams return to action on Friday at USC Aiken for a 4 p.m. contest.
