Shepherd Baseball Splits with Queens

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (5-7) split with Queens College (2-6) in doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Knights gained a 13-7 win in game one, while the Rams earned the split with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap. Sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) doubled and sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) reached on a hit-by-pitch. The pair later scored when senior third baseman Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC) reached on an error.

The Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) singled and junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) reached on a hit-by-pitch. Burgreen later scored on a throwing error, while Entsminger scored on a single off the bat of sophomore second baseman Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot).

Queens scored in the fifth as Kevin Kolesar singled and later scored on a single by Paulino Harrington.

Doyle and Sloper each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 5 BB) (1-1) gained the complete game win for the Rams in the nightcap. Dylan Sabia (4.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Knights.

Queens took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one. Kolesar hit a two-run single to key the rally.

The Knights added a pair of runs in the behind and RBI-double by Jonathan Temenak and an RBI-single from Matthew Stepnoski.

Shepherd railed with three runs in the fourth. Doyle and Sloper each drove in a run to highlight the rally.

Queens added four runs in the sixth behind a two-run single by Sam Siegel and a two-run single by Stepnoski.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame with four runs with a two-run homer by Hamel keying the rally.

The Knights got a grand slam from Andrew Navarez in the seventh to seal the win.

Stepnoski went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Kolesar added a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.

Doyle went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Junior starter Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss. Cameron Burt (4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Knights. Michael Lamneck (2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) gained the save.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Seton Hill for a 3 p.m. contest.
