Shepherd Softball Wins Pair at Salem Tournament

SALEM, Va. – Shepherd University (7-3) gained a pair of wins in softball action at the Salem Tournament on Saturday. The Rams earned a 5-3 win over Edinboro (0-3) and added a 3-2 triumph over Gannon (7-7).

Edinboro took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo homer by Olivia Jankowski.

Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the second. Junior designated player/pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) walked and junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) reached on a  hit-by-pitch.  Senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) singled to move the runners up and the pair scored when junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on an infield error.

Edinboro took a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run homer by Shannon Gilbert.

Shepherd took the lead for good in the in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double by Gilligan and an RBI-single from senior pinch-hitter Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).

Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (4.2 IP, 0 H, 8 K, 1 BB) (1-2) picked up the win in relief for the Rams. Carley Nasca (6.0 IP, 13 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Fighting Scots.

Junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) went 3-for-4 to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams.

Gannon took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in the later game on a two-run double by Sarah Ingerick.

The Rams cut the lead to 2-1 in the third as Konopka reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single by Cox.

Shepherd tied the game in the sixth as junior pinch-runner Ariana Ramirez (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) scored when sophomore third baseman Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) walked with the bases loaded.

Shepherd scored the game-winner on the bottom of the seventh. Konopka reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cox. Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled to move Konopka to third and junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) singled to left to end the game.

Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (3-1) gained the complete game win. Kennedy DeMatteis (1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (2-4) took the loss for Gannon.

The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host Glenville State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
