Funke Leads Shepherd Women’s Lacrosse Past Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Sophomore attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) had six goals and two assists to lead Shepherd (3-2) to an 18-9 win over Newberry (2-6) in women's lacrosse action at Newberry on Tuesday afternoon.

Funke added eight ground balls and six draw controls.

Freshman attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) added four goals and an assist, while freshman attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown)  and sophomore attacker Emily Brown (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) each added a pair of goals and an assist.

Sophomore attacker Jordan Sauro (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Shippensburg) netted two goals, while senior midfielder Sarah Wendt (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore midfielder Elishia Davis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) each added a goal.

Alexis Kahler had three goals to lead the Wolves. Maegan Williams and Rachel Dillon each added a pair of goals.

Shepherd had an 11-5 edge at halftime as Funke recorded three first-half goals.

Shepherd had a 35-27 edge in shots, while Newberry had a 46-43 advantage in ground balls and a 19-10 edge in draw controls. Shepherd was 26-of-27 in clears, while Newberry was 19-of-20.

Junior goalkeeper Casey Hickman (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) had eight saves for the Rams, while Brandy Bowman recorded 13 saves for the Wolves.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Coker for an 11 a.m. contest. The start time was moved up an hour from the original noon start.
