Shepherd Softball Sweeps Glenville State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (9-3, 2-0 MEC) swept Glenville State (9-9, 0-2 MEC) in Mountain East Conference softball action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams rallied for a 4-3 win in nine innings in game one and added a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Glenville State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning in game one as pinch runner Jeri Potter scored from third base on a double steal.

The Lady Pioneers added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Catherine Pelfrey.

Shepherd rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Junior outfielder Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) belted a two-run triple and later scored on a groundout by junior outfielder Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area).

Glenville State tied the game in the seventh as Pelfrey walked and later scored on a double by Ally Brown.

Shepherd plated the game-winner in the ninth. Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled and moved to second an error. She tagged and moved to third on a fly out to right by senior designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) and scored on a wild pitch.

Sturgill and junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (1-0) fanned six and did not allow a hit in two innings of relief to pick up the win for the Rams. Tori Ward (8.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 5 BB) (3-2) took the loss for the Lady Pioneers.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap with a two-run double by Staley keying the rally.

The Rams added three runs in the second with RBI-singles by Taylor and Sturgill highlighting the rally.

The Lady Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Hayley Olson hit an RBI-triple and scored on a single by Taylor Brumfield.

Sturgill went 4-for-4 and junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) added a 3-for-3 effort with a pair of runs scored to lead a 12-hit attack for the Rams.

Mckenzie Edmonds went 3-for-3 for Glenville State.

Sturgill (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (3-2) picked up the win for the Rams. Ally Brown (1.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (6-4) took the loss for the Lady Pioneers.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The doubleheader has been pushed back an hour from the original start time.
