Shepherd Baseball Splits with West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (6-8, 1-1 MEC) split with West Virginia Wesleyan (2-12, 1-1 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at Hank Ellis Field on Sunday. The Rams gained an 8-0 win in game one, while West Virginia Wesleyan earned the split with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one behind RBI-singles by junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) and sophomore second baseman Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot).

The Rams broke the game open with six runs in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) hit a two-run triple, senior designated hitter Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC) belted a three-run homer, and sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added an RBI-triple to key the rally.

Entsminger went 4-for-4 and Hamel added a 3-for-4 effort for the Rams.

Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 7 K, 0 BB) (4-1) tossed a two-hitter to gain the win for the Rams. Jake Bishop (0-2) (5.1 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Bobcats.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on an RBI-groundout by Riley Metz.

The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI-single by Dylan Frye.

Wesleyan added three runs in the fifth on a three-run homer by Greg Smith.

Junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.

Junior starter Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (0-3) took the loss. Cameron Burt (4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Bobcats.

The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Glenville State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
