Shepherd Softball Splits with West Virginia Wesleyan

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (10-4, 3-1 MEC) split with West Virginia Wesleyan (8-7, 1-1 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Sunday. West Virginia Wesleyan rallied for a 3-2 win in game one, while Shepherd gained the split with an 8-5 triumph in the nightcap.

West Virginia Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap as Brittani Bible and Kasey Robinson each had RBI-singles.

Shepherd plated three runs on four hits and an error in the third. Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) and senior designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) each drove in a run to key the scoring.

The Rams added five runs in the fourth with a two-run double by junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) highlighting the rally.

The Bobcats added three runs in the fifth as Olivia Conaway and Bible each drove in a run.

Senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and freshman shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) added a 1-for 3 effort with two runs scored to lead the Rams.

Lauren King went 3-for-4 for the Bobcats.

Sturgill (2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (4-2) picked up the win for the Rams. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) tossed hitless ball over three innings with six strikeouts and no walks to gain the save. Haylee Shires (3.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (2-4) took the loss for the Bobcats.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one as junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled and later scored on a single by Brown.

The Rams added a run in the fifth as Brown walked and scored on a double off the bat of junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier).

The Bobcats plated three runs in the sixth to rally for the win. Brittani Bible drove in a run with an RBI-single and later scored the game-winning run on a two-run single by Megan Magsamen.

Hannah Vet (7.0 IP 8 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (6-0) gained the complete game win for the Bobcats. Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) (3-2) took the loss for the Rams.

Junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) and Brown each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Sara Scoone went 3-for-4 for the Bobcats.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
