Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (8-8, 3-1 MEC) swept Glenville State (4-13, 1-3 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at the Sue Morris Complex on Monday. The Rams gained a 10-2 win in game one and added a 20-3 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) walked and later scored on an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).

The Rams added a run in the third as sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hamel.

Shepherd increased its lead to 3-0 in the fourth as sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) walked and later scored on a double off the bat of sophomore second baseman Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot).

The Rams plated seven runs on six hits in the fifth to take a commanding lead. Burgreen belted a grand slam to key the scoring outburst.

The Pioneers got solo homers from Anthony Jarvis and Zach Bacon in the fifth.

Doyle went 3-for-5 to lead a 10-hit attack for the Rams.

Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (2-1) gained the win for the Rams. Brady Wilkinson (4.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (0-4) took the loss for the Pioneers.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo blast by Atkinson.

The Rams plated 11 runs on seven hits in the second to take a 12-0 advantage. Senior first baseman Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) smacked a grand slam to highlight the inning.

Shepherd added a run in the third on a solo homer by Heleine.

Glenville State got on the board in the bottom of the third as Carter Boswell singled and later scored on a groundout by Bryan Bayliss.

Shepherd added two runs in the sixth as sophomore catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) hit a two-run single.

Glenville State answered back in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer by Ryan Colaw.

Shepherd plated five runs in the seventh with a two-run home run by Atkinson keying the scoring outburst.

Atkinson went 4-for-6 with four runs batted in and four runs scored to lead the Rams.

Jarvis went 2-for-2 for the Pioneers.

Sophomore pitcher Wes Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill/UMES) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (2-1) earned the win. Wesley Stauffer (1.2 IP, 4 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 6 BB) (0-4) took the loss for Glenville State.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Charleston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader for Meet the Rams Day.
