Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Charleston

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (10-8, 5-1 MEC) swept University of Charleston (10-10, 4-2 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at the Sue Morris Complex on Sunday. The Rams gained a 7-0 win in game one and added a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).

Shepherd increased its lead to 4-0 in the third behind solo blasts from junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) and Hamel.

Shepherd completed the scoring in the fifth with a solo blast from Atkinson and a two-run round-tripper off the bat of senior third baseman Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC).

Hamel went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI and Atkinson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored with a pair of RBI.

Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 8 K, 4 BB) (5-1) tossed a two-hitter to gain the win for the Rams. Brandon Harris (4.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (2-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.

Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the second in the nightcap as senior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) belted a two-run blast and Atkinson, Hamel, and sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) each drove in a run.

The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 5-1 with a run in the third. Ryan Hunt led off with a single and later scored on a single by Colby Johnson.

Shepherd increased its lead to 6-1 in the fourth as Atkinson walked and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Rams tacked on a run in the fifth as junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) singled and later scored on a single by Atkinson.

Charleston added a run in the sixth as Jack Brunetti doubled and scored on a single by Colton Bauer.

Shepherd capped the scoring in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single from sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).

Atkinson and Haymaker each had three hits to lead the Rams.

Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) (6.0 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (3-1) gained the win for the Rams. Robert Fultineer (2.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (1-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.

The Rams return to action on Monday when they face West Virginia State for a noon doubleheader in Glenville.
