Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (12-8, 7-1 MEC) swept West Virginia State (11-9, 3-4 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at the Sue Morris Complex on Monday. The Rams gained a 4-3 win in game one and added a 12-6 victory in the nightcap. Shepherd runs its winning streak to six games with the sweep.
West Virginia State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on an RBI-single by Jared Hunt.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 advantage in the second on a solo blast by Jonathan Cline.
Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second on a solo blast by senior first baseman Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU).
West Virginia State increased its lead to 3-1 in the third on back-to-back doubles by Ryan McDonough and Andrew Stone.
Shepherd tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth. Junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) singled and later scored on a single by junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's). Nottingham later scored on an error.
Nottingham scored the game-winner in the sixth as he reached on a single and later scored on a single off the bat of junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU).
Sophomore reliever Mitchell Johnson (Shady Side, Md./Southern) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K 0 BB) (1-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Hunter Bradley (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The Rams used a 16-hit attack en route to the nightcap triumph.
Trailing 5-0 in the second, Shepherd rallied with 10 runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) and Atkinson each hit two-run singles and Heleine added a three-run homer to key the rally.
Sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), junior infielder Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township), and Atkinson each had three hits for the Rams.
Freshman pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (1-2) gained the victory for the Rams. West Virginia State starter Andrew Stone (1.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Concord for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
