Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – Shepherd University (12-6, 5-3 MEC) dropped a doubleheader to Notre Dame College (8-13, 4-4 MEC) in MEC softball action at Shepherd on Monday. The Falcons gained a 3-1 win in game one and rallied for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning as the Falcons plated three runs on two hits. Katelyn Rheude and Shelby Stephens each singled and later scored when Kim Crookston reached on an error. Crookston later scored on a wild pitch.
Shepherd got a run in the fifth when sophomore third baseman Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) singled and later scored when senior pinch-hitter Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) walked with the bases loaded.
Rheude went 3-for-3 to lead the Falcons.
Baker had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Senior starter Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (3-3) took the loss for the Rams. McKenzie Zigmont (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (3-2) gained the win for the Falcons.
Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the fourth in the nightcap. Rheude singled and later scored on an error. Stephens singled and later scored on a single by Erin Calhoun.
Shepherd got a run in the fifth as Staley singled and was replaced by senior pinch-runner Sarah North (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical). North scored on a triple off the bat of junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).
The Rams took a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled and later scored when junior outfielder Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area/Hagerstown CC) reached on a fielder's choice. Junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) also singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Staley.
The Falcons scored two runs on three hits and one error in the seventh to gain the win. Halli Swiger singled home Nicole Paolucci with the game-winner.
Brown went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Sturgill (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB) (5-3) took the loss for the Rams. Taylor Olsen (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (5-6) picked up the win for the Falcons.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to West Chester a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
